Section 1. The name of this chapter shall be the Peak to Peak Chapter of the National Honor Society.
Section 1. The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, and to encourage the development of character and leadership in students of Peak to Peak Charter School.
Section 1. All decisions made by members or officers of the chapter are subject to veto by the principal of Peak to Peak.
Section 2. The faculty adviser approves or rejects proposed chapter activities and meetings. The faculty adviser shall also be responsible for keeping chapter records.
Section 3. The faculty council shall be responsible for making decisions regarding membership. This includes selection of new members as well as discipline and/or removal of active members (both subject to the constraints noted in Article IV, Section 5). The faculty council, along with the faculty adviser and principal shall periodically review and possibly ammend articles IV and V of these bylaws.
Section 4. The chapter president shall call and preside over chapter meetings.
Article IV: Definition of membership for the group
Section 1. Membership in this chapter shall be based upon scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Section 2. Membership in this chapter shall be known as active, honorary, and graduate. Graduate and honorary members have no vote. Active members become graduate members at graduation.
Section 3. In order to be eligible for membership, candidates must meet the following requirements:
All students who meet these requirements shall be considered candidates for membership. Selection shall procede according to the provisions of Article V. The one semester residency rule may be waived for a NHS member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from the former principal to the Peak to Peak adviser. In this case, the student shall be automatically accepted as a member in the Peak to Peak chapter. Similarly, an active NHS member who transfers from Peak to Peak shall be given a letter indicating the status of his/her membership and signed by the principal and adviser. Transfer members must meet the academic standards above (non-cumulative) within one grading period in order to retain membership.
Article V: Procedures for Selection of New Members
Section 1. The faculty council shall consider all students who meet the requirements set out in Article IV, Section 3. The faculty council shall consider only those students who meet the requirements set out in Article IV, Section 3.
Section 2. The faculty adviser shall circulate a form to all teachers of each candidate in order to solicit feedback on the the candidates qualities of character, leadership and service. Teacher feedback may include student activities and attitudes both on and off campus. The evaluation of a student's character is not limited to school activities.
Section 3. The faculty council shall consider the information gathered for each candidate. All information used to evaluate a candidate shall be in a written and signed form. Anonymous information shall not be used. The faculty adviser shall ensure that only allowable, relevant information is used in each evaluation.
Section 4. After consideration, selection as a member of the Peak to Peak Chapter of the National Honor Society shall be by majority vote of the faculty council.
Section 5. A member who is not selected may appeal to the principal within two weeks of receiving notice. After that time, records used in the selection process are destroyed.
Article VI: Meetings and Special Sessions
Section 1. Regular meetings of this chapter shall be held monthly during the school year on days designated by the executive committee and approved by the chapter adviser. The executive committee is defined in Article VII.
Section 2. The officers of the chapter shall be elected at the last regular meeting of the year.
Section 3. Special meetings, approved by the executive committee, may be called by the president.
Section 4. All meetings shall be open meetings and shall be held under the sponsorship of the chapter adviser or some member of the faculty selected by him.
Article VII: Duties and Responsibilities
Section 1. The executive committee shall consist of the chapter officers and the chapter adviser. The chapter officers are active Peak to Peak NHS members. The faculty adviser is a Peak to Peak faculty member selected by the principal.
Section 2. The executive committee shall have general charge of the meetings and business of the chapter, but any action on the part of the executive committee may be subject to review by the active members of the chapter.
Section 3. The officers of this chapter shall be a president, vice-president, secretary treasurer,and, media manager. Officers are elected by the chapter according the the rules set forth in Article VIII.
Section 4. It shall be the duty of the chapter
president to preside at the meetings of this chapter. The president
shall also monitor the progress of group activities and help resolve
conflicts through mediation.
Section 5. The vice-president shall facilitate service by performance by keeping track of service opportunities and by coordinating the formation of activity groups. The vice-president shall also fill the chair of the president in his or her absence.
Section 6. The treasurer shall receive and disburse all funds of the chapter and shall keep an accurate account of receipts and disbursements in accordance with school regulations.
Section 7. All accounts of the treasurer must be audited annually by an auditing committee appointed by the executive committee of the chapter.
Section 8. The chapter secretary shall keep the minutes of meetings, a record of all business, and all records on file.
Section 9. The media manager shall disseminate announcements of chapter meetings and activities. These include but are not limited to notice of deadlines for submission of Request for Consideration forms, notice of the induction ceremony, the year's meeting schedule and group service activities. Dissemination shall be through appropriate media channels. The media manager shall also facilitate public relations campaigns for NHS group activities (e.g., NHS carnivals, blood drive). The media manager shall also manage the chapter's website. The media manager shall act as chapter historian by completing the NHS annual report form by the end of the school year.
Section 10. Active members are expected to maintain the standards of Article IV.
Section 11. All active members are expected to perform community service each year. The amount and types of service activities required each year is set at the beginning of the year by the executive committee. Service activity categories are:
Section 12. Any active member who falls below the standards by which they were selected for admission is subject to dismissal. Dismissal is a serious consequence and is only pursued when necessary to maintain the integrity of the chapter. A dismissal can only occur after the procedure below is followed.
Once a member is dismissed from membership, he or she is never again eligible for membership in the National Honor Society. A dismissed member must turn in his or her membership card and pins.
Members who graduate with a final high school GPA below the requirements of Article IV, Section 3 will not receive NHS honors or recognition at graduation and will not be listed as a graduate member in chapter records.
Section 13. If a student resigns from the National Honor Society, he or she shall never again be eligible for membership or its benefits.
Section 14. There shall be no dues assessed by the members of the chapter.
Article VIII: Procedures for Election of Officers
Section 1. Chapter officers shall be elected during the last regularly-scheduled meeting of the school year. Officers shall be installed a special meeting as called for in the chapter calendar.
Section 2. Prior to officer elections, candidates for each position shall be nominated either by a chapter member or by the faculty adviser. Each member who agrees to run for an officer position shall submit a statement supporting their candidacy at least one week before the election is scheduled to take place.
Section 3. A majority of votes cast shall be necessary to elect any officer of this chapter.
Section 4. In the event of a vacancy, an election shall be scheduled and held as soon as the rules above allow.
Section 1. This chapter shall conduct its meetings according to Robert's Rules of Order (Newly Revised, 10th edition) in all points except as provided in the chapter's Standing Rules.
Article X: Method and procedure for ratification of bylaws
Section 1. Article IV and Article V shall be approved by the faculty council and by the principal. All other articles shall be approved by a two-thirds vote of the active chapter members. The vote shall take place at the first regular meeting of the chapter.
Section 2. These bylaws shall be considered ratified and in force when the above approvals have been obtained.
Article XI: Provisions for amending these bylaws
Section 1. These bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the chapter, provided that the proposed amendment has been approved by the executive committee of the chapter and that notice to members has been given at least one month prior to the meetings at which it is to be voted upon.
Section 2. The provisions of Article IV and Article V may only be amended by the faculty council.
Section 3. All changes to these bylaws are subject to the approval of the principal.
