How to determine your non-weighted GPA

The Peak to Peak National Honor Society uses a non-weighted grade point average to determine qualification for admission to or continuation in the school's NHS chapter. The philosophy behind this standard is that scholarship (one of the pillars of NHS membership) should be demonstrated by exemplary performance in all classes taken. Whether or not, you are taking an honors class in a particular subject, you should strive to meet that course's standard of excellence.

Calculation of non-weighted GPA

To calculate your non-weighted GPA, simply add up points for each semester grade you have received in high school. An A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3 points, and a C is worth 2 points. When you have the total, simply divide by the total number of semester grades given. This is your non-weighted GPA.
Below are some examples to help you with your transcript.

Example Transcript:

First Semester
MathB
ScienceB
EnglishA
HistoryB
LanguageA
ArtA
Second Semester
MathB
ScienceB
EnglishA
HistoryA
LanguageA
JournalismA

In this case, you have 7 As for 28 points and 5 Bs for 15 points. The total is 43 points. Dividing by 12, you have a non-weighted GPA of 3.58, just above the 3.5 requirement.

Definition of core GPA

Membership also requires a 3.5 non-weighted GPA for core classes. A core class is a class in math, science, english, history, and world language. To calculate your core non-weighted GPA, simply repeat the calculation above for only those classes in core departments. In the example above, you would have 5 As for 20 points and 5 Bs for 15 points. The total is 35 points. Dividing by 10, you have a non-weighted GPA of 3.5, also meeting the NHS requirement.

If you are a junior or senior, you would use grades from all high-school semesters.
