Take a used popcan and put only enough water in it to cover the bottom. Turn an electric or gas stove on and put the can on the burner. While it is heating up, prepare a container of cold water and set it near the stove. When the water is boiling in the can, quickly and carefully flip the can over into the cold water. Make sure it goes in hole first or the pressure will equalize by just sucking in air through the hole. Please have your parents email me when you are done along with an explanation of what happened. This is a mixture of corn starch and water with some strange characteristics. Use about a cup of corn starch and then just enough water to get it all wet. They should do the demonstration and then tell you why it happened. The density column was a demonstration where I put several different liquids in a graduated cylinder and they stayed separate due to their densities. I used corn syrup, water, rubbing alcohol. The trick is to add them slowly so that the water and alcohol do not mix since alcohol is soluable in water. Or Lake Nyos was a volcanic lake in Africa that exploded with carbon dioxide and wiped out a village at the base of the volcano. If your student would like to find an article about Lake Nyos and write a 1 paragraph summary of the event I would give them 3 points extra credit.
