FAQ's about Advisory/Homeroom
-
What is Advisory/Homeroom?
At the elementary level, students are assigned to a homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers will be making connections with students and families during distance learning and in order to ensure a positive learning experience.
At the secondary level, for the 2020-21 academic year, all secondary students will be placed in grade-level advisory groups of 10-16 students with an assigned staff advisor.
Advisory will meet at 9:15 on Mondays beginning August 24th as follows:
- 6th-8th grade, every week
- 9th grade, every week, as needed
- 10th-12th grade, every other week
These small advisory groups were recommended by a combined group of task forces this past June as an essential component of Peak to Peak’s improvement plan for distance and hybrid learning. Regardless of the learning phase the school operates under, advisory groups will offer consistent, targeted opportunities for relationship-building and connection, as well as communication predictability and consistency between staff, students and families. 6-12 advisory groups will facilitate and strengthen equity, student engagement and advocacy, student and family support, transition needs at the 6th and 9th grades, and essential community- and culture-building throughout the year.
6-12 Advisory Goals
- Create relationships of support between staff, students and families that boost authentic connections, community, school spirit, accountability, and student growth and success.
- Offer a consistent forum in which students and families receive specific information throughout the 2020/21 year, regardless of the learning phase or if a student is attending school in person.
- Monitor authentic student engagement and wellness through frequent check-ins on work completion, social and emotional health, resources needed and ongoing questions and concerns.
- Provide a dedicated time and space for understanding student needs while also building a communication network for families.
- Provide a dedicated time and space for relationship-building initiatives that address our school community’s commitment to ongoing growth in socio-emotional and equity work.
