Jam, a selectively mute transgender teen, lives in a town where everyone says all of society’s evils, “the monsters,” are gone. One night, Jam wanders down to her mother’s studio and finds a particularly intricate painting of a creature. Jam trips and cuts herself, getting some blood on the painting. All of a sudden, the creature comes to life and has a message for Jam. There is a monster in her town and it is living in her best friend’s house. This sets Jam, the creature, and her best friend on a quest to uncover what is going on and seek justice.

Pet is one of those rare books with truly wide appeal. It is genre-defying, including elements of realistic fiction, fantasy, and adventure. It will also appeal to a wide variety of ages from middle school to high school to adults. I even recommended it to my grandmother recently. It is a quick read full of deep questions about what evil means and how to seek justice that will stay with you long after you finish it.
