Board Update
1. Auditors Report We heard from Ryan Fiore at CLA regarding our audit. He said Dan Koerner and Louise Peng did an incredible job and that we had a clean and timely audit.2. Pressure Points Across All Levels We heard from each of our principals about each of their current pressure points, beyond needing more space. Melissa Christensen talked about the need to meet a wide variety of needs in a growing population of students who need additional services and how we can do that with our current limitations. Clara Quinlan shared with us that the vacancies within her staff have added additional daily issues that her teachers and staff are having to navigate. The middle school is also looking for ways to give the students more developmentally appropriate freedom. Kyle Mathews talked about standards based grading and the strain on office hours the transition has created. The high school is working on the messaging around the practice the students should be doing before thinking they are prepared for an assessment.3. Strategic Discussion The Board had a Strategic Discussion surrounding our current KPI's and how as a school we are measuring against other schools which would be our benchmarks vs. how we are measuring ourselves and where we would like to get to which is our thresholds. As a school we do extremely well compared to other schools in our district as well as the state, but we want to hold ourselves to a higher standard and continue to set attainable but difficult goals. We talked about tying the KPI's more directly to the strategic plan as well as perhaps revamping some of the KPI's to reflect what we are working on as a school.4. Annual Meeting Peak to Peak will hold our annual meeting on May 1st of 2024. We are hoping to make this a community event with Our Meeting, a candidate Q & A for the new Board Seats, Voting, Signing Day for Seniors, Food Trucks, an Orchestra Concert, and more ideas to come.5. Next Board Meeting Our next board meeting will be on December 6th at 5pm. -
Traffic Concerns
Hello Families,
As the weather gets colder, we want to send a couple of traffic and drop off / pick up reminders:
-
Elementary Families: The traffic circle is only for drop off and pick up. Please do not use that area to park and walk your student into school.
-
Secondary Families: A few afterschool pickup reminders / requests:
-
Do not bypass the car line and park in the staff parking lot (by the tennis courts) to pick up your student(s). This creates more congestion and backs up the exit flow from the pickup line.
-
When you get to the pickup area on the north side of the high school building, pull all the way forward. If you pass where your student is waiting and require them to walk a bit to get to your car, that’s okay…when cars don’t pull all the way up, the traffic down Puma Drive gets really backed up.
-
Please be kind to the person directing traffic at the intersection of Puma Drive and the parking lot / car line. If you have concerns or feedback, please do not yell; instead, feel free to email any ideas or suggestions to Jennifer Douglas, Executive Director of Operations, at jennifer.douglas@bvsd.org.
-
Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe at drop off / pick up!

Food Service FAQs
This week, elementary teachers shared information with students in classrooms on how to advocate for what they want and need in the cafeteria. Aligned with this, we have created these FAQs for parents/guardians.
As an overview, our school runs an independent food service program in alignment with USDA Food and Nutrition Service guidelines. Every day, we serve two free meals:
-
Breakfast (from 7:30 - 7:55am before school starts)
-
Lunch (from 10:45 - 11:45am)
Funding is provided by both the National School Lunch Program and Colorado’s Healthy Meals for All Program.
What meal choice options do students have for lunch?
Every day at lunch, we offer three entree options:
-
Hot lunch. The menu varies each day and there is a six-week rotation. You can see the menu on our website.
-
Peanut butter and jelly. (Students can take one or two and there are two flavor choices: grape and strawberry.)
-
Cheese sandwich.
What dietary requests are regularly offered?
Within hot lunch, there are always these options:
-
Vegetarian - See this link for the vegetarian menu.
-
Gluten Free - See this link for the gluten free menu.
Is the fruit and salad bar available every day?
Yes! With all meals, students also need to take fruits and vegetables from the salad bar area and milk. (Taking these are part of the USDA guidelines. Here is an overview.)
How can I support my student(s) in getting what they want and need at lunch?
We are really working with students on advocating for what they want / need when they come through the lunch line. Please help us by talking to your student about how to ask for what they want. For example, you can provide these examples:
-
Can I please have a vegetarian hot lunch?
-
I am gluten free; can I have the gluten free option?
-
Can I please have peanut butter and jelly? I’d like one grape and one strawberry.
What if my student gets the wrong thing or something falls off their tray?
We want students to get the right foods based on their preferences. If your student gets the wrong thing or if something falls off their tray, remind them that they can ask an adult for help.
How are allergies accommodated?
-
If your student has a severe allergy and the health room has been notified and/or we have medical documentation of that allergy, they will go through the food service line with an adult to ensure that they get the proper food.
-
If your student has a newly identified allergy, reach out to our School Nurse Consultant Nicole Roscoe or our Health Room Para Donna Rader to start the documentation and accommodation process.
-
While we do offer accommodations for students with medical allergies, we cannot offer the accommodation of having an adult go through the food line with a student based on preferences. So, for example, if your student / family do not eat meat, we encourage you to work with your student to ask for a vegetarian meal.
What is the new halal food option?
We are doing a six-week pilot of a once-a-week halal food option (in addition to gluten free and vegetarian options) in October and November. If your student would like a halal meat option the days when those options are offered, simply ask for a halal meal when you go through the food line. See this link for the halal menu.
Who should I contact if I have additional questions or concerns about food service?
Please contact one of our food service managers:
-
Paula Greenspan, Kitchen Manager - paula.greenspan@bvsd.org
-
Elizabeth Begley, Food Services Program Manager - elizabeth.begley@bvsd.org

Peak Annual Fund Update, 25% of goal!
Thank you Puma families who have given to the Peak Annual Fund so far! We are currently just over $55,000 which is ¼ of our goal. As a reminder, all families are asked to participate at a level meaningful to them. We have received donations of $25 to $5,000 and all levels in between. Donation amounts are never publicly displayed. Your donation directly supports our annual funding gap due to our building debt payment which supports this year’s operating budget including teacher salaries, campus maintenance, instructional materials and much more. Thank you for joining 24 years of Peak to Peak families who have supported the Peak Annual Fund to ensure our school remains financially healthy. We will continue to draw names for Pete deliveries and other spirit items delivered to students of participating families ($10 or more) over the next few weeks. You can make a donation at give.peaktopeak.org. Thank you for your support!
