The Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission has awarded Peak to Peak three $1000 Arts in Education grants! The first grant will fund a middle school project titled "Inside/Outside: My Letter to the World" during the 2023-24 school year and was championed by Ms. Bunting.

Our orchestra teacher, Ms. Schneider received grants for the following projects:

Recording Lafayette's Musicians of the Future: Students each semester will have the opportunity to record their bands and solo projects with a professional recording engineer at Dog House Music Studio. The cost of professional music recording has skyrocketed over the past twenty years, and more barriers to entry to the music industry exist than ever before. This program not only provides youth with free recording time, but prepares students to be efficient and effective in their music creation process, and equips them with the knowledge they need to be successful in the Colorado Music Scene and beyond.

Intro to Sound Engineering for Budding Musicians: Peak to Peak students in Guitar Lab, Tri-M and the larger student population will visit a local music studio in Lafayette to explore a career path not always included in standard secondary music curriculum: sound engineering. With this grant funding, multiple field trips will be able to take place for students to tour the student, meet with professional engineers, and see how they can get involved with the local music scene.

A team of high school students working with our Innovation teacher, Ms. Letter, is the state winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition! Led by Alex Zou (11th grade) the team includes: Shreya Senthilkumar (11th grade), Tanishka Tagare (10th grade), Josephine Gaarder (9th grade), Amanda Zou (9th grade), and Penelope Letter (9th grade). The students have been diligently developing a water-testing device using light. After reading about how fire damage can impact pipes and cause benzene to leak into the water supplies as it did after the Paradise fire in California, this team of students wanted to use technology to create an instant test for benzene in water. Current lab testing takes time and can be prohibitively expensive, so these students are trying to prototype an equitable and economic way to test the water. Peak to Peak science teachers have offered their support making this a truly collaborative project. Mr. Schaefer helped them understand the chemical structure of benzene, Ms. Shedd helped them plan safe prototyping by substituting salicylic acid for safer prototyping, and Mr. Hankla demonstrated how to use a phone spectrometer, The team is one of 50 to advance to the next round. Way to innovate, Pumas!
