Opt Out Policy
As provided for in state law and district policy, parents may excuse their students from taking CMAS and state-mandated college preparatory and college admissions examinations. Contact James Fuller (james.fuller@bvsd.org) no later than March 5th if you are considering excusing your student from specific state tests, so that you may make an informed decision with regard to the impact non-participation may have on your school and district. During testing, our entire focus will be on supporting students as they take the test. As a result, families are asked to arrange an excused absence from school on testing days and appropriate alternative activities of their own if their child will not be participating.
Opting out of the tests increases the risk of lower average assessment scores at Peak to Peak. This could result in a lower effectiveness rating for educators or a lower accreditation rating for Peak to Peak. Additionally, state and federal law expects schools to administer state tests to at least 95% of their students. Failing to meet score and/or participation expectations may result in a school receiving the "School in Need of Improvement" designation. This requires the school to undergo Performance Improvement Planning and monitoring.
Please also note that the Colorado SAT School Day exam is a graduation requirement at Peak to Peak, regardless of additional SAT registrations outside of this date.
