Medications In School

Students are not allowed to possess or carry any medication except for rescue inhalers and/or an epi-pen with the proper forms completed each school year, per BVSD policy and Colorado State Regulations/Guidelines. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal remedies. This is for your student's safety as well as the safety of other students.

The P2P health room is required to follow the BVSD Medications In School Guidelines. Medications include prescription, over-the-counter, herbal remedies, and supplements. Parents may always come to school and administer medication to their child.

Peak to Peak students may receive medications at school according to the following procedure:

  • Medications may not be in the personal possession of students. EXCEPTION: Any student who requires the use of an inhaler or EpiPen may carry and self-administer the prescribed medication if the physician signs a specific statement on the BVSD Medication Administration Authorization Form, endorsing the student’s capability for this, and there is a signed BVSD Contract to Carry/Self Administer Medication Form on file in the Health Room.
  • For all prescription and non-prescription medications, a student’s parent or guardian shall make a written request for school personnel to administer medications by providing a completed BVSD Medication Administration Authorization Form, which is to be signed by both parent and physician.
  • A new form must be signed and submitted for each new prescription medication, non-prescription medication or dosage change. Authorization forms must be completed each year.
  • Medications should always be delivered to the health room staff or office staff by an adult.
  • The student must report to the health room or school office to take medications.
  • Prescription medication supplied by the student’s parents or guardian must be in a properly labeled bottle dispensed by a pharmacy.
  • Non-prescription, “as needed” medications must be in the original labeled container. The bottle should also be labeled with the student’s name.
  • It is the responsibility of the parent to obtain all unused medication from the school when the medication is discontinued, expired, the school year ends, or the student transfers to another school. At the end of the school year, school staff will dispose of all unclaimed medications.

Medications and Field Trips

Medications on field trips in the State of Colorado are administered by P2P Staff under the guidance of P2P's School Nurse Consultant (SNC) - A volunteer is never responsible for medication administration.

Please see the Field Trips page for more information.

After School-Hour Events

The health room will NOT provide medications for events that happen after school hours. It is the responsibility of families to provide medications and training to staff/chaperones.

Staff can refuse the responsibility of medications.
