Coronavirus 03.18.20: Update Week 1: #3
Dear Peak to Peak Community,
For today’s update, we want to focus on the importance of giving staff, families, and students time and space. Having this week and next to rest our minds and bodies is more important than ever, especially if we move into an extended closure. We know teachers are thinking ahead and some may be reaching out to your students to complete current work. Asking students to do anything additional is not necessary or expected at this time.
We understand that there are many questions regarding closure beyond Spring Break. As is our standard practice, we are aligning with state and district guidelines and directives. We are well aware of our ability, as a charter, to deviate from BVSD’s closure plans if it becomes necessary; however, because there are legal ramifications and additional implications to closures that may impact instructional minutes and days, Peak to Peak will wait for further guidance before making decisions for our school. At this time, based on our assessment of the current situation, it is safe to say that we are planning for an extended closure.
Preparing for Distance Learning
We recognize that shifting to distance learning, should it become necessary, will be a big change for our students and families. It will be a significant change for our staff as well. We want to be clear that we will make this transition gradually, and that we will communicate regularly to ensure that students have all the information they need and that assignments and online expectations are given at an appropriate developmental pace. We will not expect students or staff to sit at computers for extended periods of time, as we know this is not healthy for anyone. Specific guidance and protocols for distance learning will be provided at the appropriate time.
As a general guideline, we are able to offer one Chromebook per family based on need. Please understand that at this time we do not have the ability to provide a Chromebook to every student. Our distance learning expectations will not require students to be online all day. We believe that most families will be able to manage with students sharing devices. Your students do not necessarily need a Chromebook to accomplish tasks. In most cases, an iPad, laptop, desktop, or even a smartphone will be sufficient. On a case-by-case basis, we will work with your family if there is a need for additional devices.
If you are in need of a Chromebook to support distance learning, devices will be available for pickup this Saturday, 3/21, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Peak to Peak. If you haven't already, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a device. Please try to pick up the device on Saturday but if you absolutely can not come on Saturday, please contact Tracy Durland. All families requesting a Chromebook need to complete the online agreement for a device reservation prior to picking it up. Chromebooks are available free of charge.
During this time, your students may feel a need to help and contribute to their community in some way. We strongly encourage you to follow social distancing guidelines while finding ways for your students to feel helpful. Our student leaders are coming up with alternative plans for extending the Soles4Souls shoe drive. After Spring Break, there will be more information.
Athletics and Activities:
CHSAA has canceled all athletics through April 18th. We will keep you updated as we learn more about plans beyond that date.
With the cancelation of the Gala, the Friends Office and numerous volunteers are developing plans for ongoing fund development. Thank you for your patience as we make adjustments.
As of tomorrow, March 19th, we have combined our meal assistance service with other Boulder Valley Schools. Families who need meal assistance should go to Pioneer or Sanchez Elementary between 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM to pick up food. Please contact Elizabeth Begley with any questions.
Once again, we are grateful for the outpouring of support for our teachers, staff members and our community members in need. Your generosity of spirit is overwhelming and a clear marker of the importance of a community during this time. Please take good care of yourselves and your families. We’ll be back in touch soon.
With best regards,
The Peak to Peak Leadership Team
