Update on Secondary Finals and Student Check-Out
Dear Peak to Peak Students and Families,
As you all know, these unprecedented times have caused all schools to make necessary adjustments to best serve our students and families while working in a virtual format. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we navigate this uncharted territory together. Below are some important updates that affect secondary students in grades 6-12.
Final Exams for Secondary Students
With the recent announcement from Dr. Anderson that we will not be returning to school this year, we have decided that Peak to Peak secondary students will not have traditional, end-of-semester final exams. Instead, teachers will be sharing out their plans for end-of-year course tasks, assignments, projects and/or optional assessments to complete their courses for the year. The goal is to focus on maximum flexibility and equity for our students. There are many factors that go into this decision, but first and foremost, we believe it is what is fair and best for the students we serve.
We are aware that the topic of final exams is the cause of anxiety for many of our students while engaging in distance learning. As you can imagine, not all of our families have equitable access to a quiet and appropriate testing environment, making it difficult to ensure all students have equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the standards learned this year.
Additionally, we continue to focus on the importance of engagement by completion of assignments while working from our homes. We believe that while distance learning continues, students engaging with their teachers and completing the tasks assigned to them should be the determining factor for our students’ final grades, rather than traditional, more highly weighted final assessments that we cannot guarantee will be delivered to students in an equitable way. Look for communication from your child’s teachers about end-of-year course expectations and opportunities, and how they are working to help all Pumas successfully complete the school year.
Important Dates for Seniors
At this time, we anticipate the last day of regular instruction for our seniors will be Friday, May 8th, with all final tasks and assignments due by Tuesday, May 12th. Here is the schedule of dates for seniors:
- Friday, May 8th: Last day of instruction for seniors
- Monday, May 11th through Friday, May 22nd: College Board Advanced Placement Home Exams. Please see the College Board’s AP testing schedule here. Students with any conflicts between these exams and their ongoing academic courses may reach out to their teachers to request adjustments as needed.
- Tuesday, May 12th: All final tasks and assignments due
- Wednesday, May 13th: All senior grades due
- Thursday, May 14th: Senior check-out day. Seniors will be assigned on-site campus times by alphabet to 10-minute, in-building access to gather personal belongings from lockers, pay outstanding fees, pick up yearbooks, collect end-of-year awards, return LMC texts and materials, return Chromebooks, pick up caps and gowns, and more. We will send those times in a separate email to senior families. Students planning to enter any of the buildings during check-out must be free of any COVID-19 symptoms, maintain at least six feet of social distance from others at all times, use hand sanitizer prior to entry, and wear masks throughout their time on campus.
- Wednesday, July 22nd: Tentative senior graduation date. We will be sharing out more detailed plans for senior graduation, which is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22nd from 12-2pm (site to be determined).
Kindergarten through 11th Grade Item Pick Up
On-site item pick up for grades kindergarten through 11th grade will take place at alphabetically scheduled times during the week of May 18th. Additional details about that final student check-out process will be coming soon. Again, anyone planning to enter any of the buildings during check-out must be free of any COVID-19 symptoms, maintain at least six feet of social distance from others at all times, use hand sanitizer prior to entry, and wear masks throughout their time on campus.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to providing all of our students with the best possible educational experience, regardless of circumstance. We understand that distance learning is not ideal for many of our families and can result in families being concerned about their child’s academic progress. We also know that students are missing the extra-curricular opportunities that they are unable to participate in. Please know that we will continue to keep you informed as we learn more about the future of teaching and learning at Peak to Peak.
Like you, we are disappointed that we will not be able to see our students in-person for the remainder of the year, but we will take this opportunity to find new and unique ways to serve our students well—taking a challenging situation and turning it into an opportunity to learn and grow in order to provide an even better learning experience for our students in the years to come.
