NEW Volunteering and the Accountability Committee

Dear Peak to Peak Families,

Thanks to each and every one of you who have helped to make the first days of the 2019-20 school year so successful! We have had a fabulous start, and are looking forward to the year ahead.  I hope your students are coming home and telling you about all the wonderful things happening in their classrooms. We are here to help, so please let us know if there is anything we can do to help your students transition into the new year.

As you know, Peak to Peak depends on its volunteers for many important roles at the school. If you’re looking for a committee to join, please consider attending the Accountability Committee’s first meeting of the year on Monday, August 26th at 3:30 pm in the Inn (formerly Think Tank) Conference Room on the first floor of the north building. This important volunteer group is a standing committee of the board and is responsible for conducting the annual family survey as well as collecting and analyzing data to assist in the school’s continuous improvement efforts. Open to all members of the Peak to Peak community, this committee meets monthly and comprises parents, teachers, and administrators from all school levels. At the meeting on Monday, committee chair Pragati Sharma will provide an overview of the committee’s purpose, as well as the plan for the full school year. More information about the committee can be found on our website, or by following this link: Accountability Committee

The Accountability Committee is just one example of the many volunteer opportunities available to you as a parent or guardian at Peak to Peak. I appreciate all of our volunteers who give generously of their time and talents for the benefit of our students and staff. Peak to Peak would not be the wonderful school that it is without our amazing volunteers!

With gratitude for all you do,

Kelly Reeser

Executive Director of Education

NEW Urgent Volunteer Need in Library on Monday

We are in need of some volunteers (as many as interested) who can help us this coming Monday 8/26.  We are looking for help all day, starting in the morning.  We will be moving some shelves and restocking books so the more hands the better so we can get the library back open for our students.  Library Set Up

Elementary

One School, One Book

Dear Peak to Peak Families,

This month Peak to Peak Elementary will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book. Every classroom will be reading the same book starting the week of August 26th through the week of  December 9th.

With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff - will be participating, and we can all reap the many benefits. Each homeroom classroom will read a chapter a week.  As we start the school year we will gear up for our book club with hints and clues the week of August 19th and reveal our book to all classes on Monday, August 26th.

Once we start reading we encourage you to ask your student questions about the book and discuss connections you may have with the book.  If you would like to buy a copy of the book for home, please do so, but know it is not necessary. In addition to reading the book, we will have weekly activities including trivia games, special days and other activities to encourage interest and excitement around the book. We will keep you up to date on One School One Book activities through weekly classroom newsletters and the Weekly Digest.

One School, One Book is a novel program in that children at all grade levels will all be listening to the same book. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood and enjoyed by younger students, but that will still captivate and stimulate older children.  We hope to talk with both you and your student sometime this month about the adventures of our main character-there will be a lot to talk about.

With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.

Melissa Christensen, Elementary Principal

Holly Monarski, Elementary Assistant Principal

If you can’t attend but have something to share, we always welcome your feedback at any time through email, phone calls, or in-person conversations.  We look forward to speaking with you.

iReady Assessment Day

Attention Middle School Families!  Monday, August 26th will be our iReady Assessment Day for the Beginning of Year Reading and Math Diagnostics. These assessments provide our teachers with important information on our students as individual learners and for our school as a whole. This feedback will be used to guide our instruction as the year gets underway. We greatly appreciate your support with this testing day.

Here are the important things your family needs to know:
  • Monday, 8/26, will be a full day of school for all middle schoolers. However, we will not follow the bell schedule as there will be no classes.
  • Encourage your child to get a good night's sleep and eat some breakfast,
  • Please send your child with headphones, a water bottle, and a choice reading book (for if they finish either diagnostic early),
  • Your child will test with his/her GLT Teacher (we met for the first time as GLT groups this week- your child knows what this means!)
  • The iReady testing will take place in the morning for both reading and math,
  • Then students will have lunch, like a typical school day,
  • Finally, the day will conclude with grade level and middle school-wide community-building activities.
Please reach out to Erin Roof, our K-8 MTSS Coordinator, at erin.roof@bvsd.org, with any questions about our schedule for that day. We are grateful for this focused morning of testing so our students have the opportunity to do their best. Thank you for your partnership!

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION & NEEDS:

Welcome back parents and students.  If you do not know me, my name is Nicole Harrison and I am the Peak to Peak Volunteer Coordinator. It takes a lot of wonderful volunteers to run our school so we appreciate all of the help we can get.  If you have any questions please feel free to email me at harrisonnicole@me.com or call at (303)803-0453. Every week I will be posting the needs of our school for volunteer opportunities.  Also once a month on the first Tuesday of the month we have a volunteer meeting from 2:00-3:00 PM and anyone is welcome to join.  Please also make sure to sign up for our FaceBook page because we post last minute needs there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1594466300665141/ Thank you for all of your help.

URGENT NEW NEED: We are in need of some volunteers (as many as interested) who can help us this coming Monday 8/26 and Tuesday 8/27 (Monday is the most important).  We are looking for help all day, starting in the morning.  We will be moving some shelves and restocking books so the more hands the better so we can get the library back open.  Library Set Up

STAFF LUNCHESStaff lunches will be a little different this year. The first lunch is 9/12 and I will send out a link next week for the sign-up. The first lunch will be an all school volunteer donation. The following three lunches will be broken down by school level. Elementary parents will do the 11/14 lunch for the staff, Secondary parents will do the 1/24 lunch for the staff, and High School parents will do the 3/5 lunch for the staff. The last lunch for the school year will be on 5/8 and it will be an all school lunch again. We are hoping this will help alleviate some of the same people having to do all of the lunches.

NEEDS: Other Volunteer Positions
1. Box Top Collection and Organization. Boxtops is changing the way they “tops” will be collected. The woman who has been volunteering for the program’s daughter graduated from school and we need to find a new person to manage this process. Carey Beneke cbeneke99@msn.com

2. Mock Trial Coach. Peak to Peak parents! Are you an attorney or member of the National Bar Association looking for a chance to help out our school? Our Mock Trial team is in need of a coach for this 2019-2020 season. We meet once a week, any time after school, for an hour. We are completely flexible in scheduling practice times and dates! Mock Trial is a phenomenal way to raise the confidence and community in our student body. Please let us know if you’re interested by contacting abkerrane01@bvsd.org.

3. Staff Appreciation Team. We need some new volunteers to help coordinate our staff appreciation events. Our last team did an amazing job of outlining the events. The new team is welcome to make it their own or follow what the previous team did. Some of the events are the Wrapping Event for the Staff in the Winter and The Staff Appreciation week in the Spring.

4. The Peak Gala Committee is looking for a Co-Chair!  Are you looking for a fun and meaningful volunteer opportunity this year?  Consider serving as a Peak Gala co-chair!   You will not be alone in this fun endeavor.  Not only do you have the support of the entire gala committee and Friends of Peak to Peak office, veteran chair Lisa Ritchie has also volunteered to partner in this co-chair role lending her experience with this event and logistical skills (thank you Lisa!). To everyone who has told us you would like to be on the committee this year stay tuned for information on our September info meeting.  We hope everyone is looking forward to another fun Peak Gala March 13th!

5.  Art laundry volunteer needed.  Katy Mathes is looking for a few volunteers to help with the weekly art laundry.  Responsibilities include:
  • Pick up art laundry at the END of the day at the END of each week
  • Art laundry should be picked up at the elementary art room.  It may be outside the door, right inside the door, or if I am not present it is possible it will still be in the red "DIRTY LAUNDRY" bin near the sinks.  If this is the case, the laundry bag lives behind that red bin.
  • Wash it using "free and clear" detergent/softener, etc.
  • Fold and return it at the BEGINNING of the day on the FIRST day of the week
  • Laundry should be returned to the art room.  Please leave it outside the odor if the room is locked, as I have morning recess duty on Mondays.
If interested please contact either Siobhan Webster (siobhanwebster@me.com) or Katy Mathes (katherine.mathes@bvsd.org)

Fingerprinting Process

You can no longer get your fingerprints done at the police station in Colorado. You will need to get the paperwork from our front office which will walk you through the steps of how to get your fingerprints done. Each volunteer will receive an unique code that will pay for your fingerprints so it will not be an out of pocket cost to you.  If you have any questions about the process please feel free to email harrisonnicole@me.com

Volunteer Sign-in Process

If you have had a background check and have been approved you will receive an email to come in and get your badge with a picture and scanning capability. Once you have your photo badge you no longer need you to sign in on the paper sheet at the attendance window. Show the office your badge and once through the locked doors in the south lobby follow the instructions below to scan into the computer.  The instructions are also be printed at the computer for your convenience. This makes our school safer, more efficient, and coming and going easier for you.

1. Use barcode on the back of your badge to scan in using the scanner.
2. Choose either An Activity or A Classroom
3. Select the classroom or the activity.
4. Before you leave the building after volunteering scan out so we know you have left the building.

Volunteer Facebook Page

We have a Facebook page for volunteers. We post the weekly update of what is coming up and last minute volunteer needs. Please subscribe to help make the page a successful tool. We will not over post to ensure we protect your time and social media barrage of information:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1594466300665141/

Volunteer Board

We have a volunteer board next to our login computer in the south lobby that will showcase all of the coming needs for the school.  Take a moment if you prefer to see our opportunities in person.

Volunteer Process

We will continue to request fingerprints from anyone who intends to volunteer more than once during the school year.  If you had your fingerprints done previously and completed all three volunteer forms then you do not need to complete any volunteer paperwork this year!  Please contact Traci Schoeneweis at traci.schoeneweis@bvsd.org or 303-453-4682 to verify your volunteer status if you are unsure.  If you only intend to volunteer once then you will be required to do the background check (not fingerprints) and the three volunteer forms each year.  Please follow this link to print them:  Volunteer Information

Volunteer training is online.  Anyone that is new to the school needs to view this before volunteering.  If you have previously attended or taken the volunteer training you do not need to do it again.  It’s a good idea for returning volunteers to view this as well.  Follow this link Volunteer Training to view the information.  It can also be found on the volunteer page of the school website.

Your Volunteer Team would love to hear from you. If you have any interest in volunteering for anything at all but do not know where to start please email one of the people below.  We would love to meet you.
