NEW!  Safety Update

You may have heard that Boulder Valley School District had several scary incidents over the past week, each of which pertained to a threat of risk. During one of these incidents Boulder High was placed on lockdown and was eventually evacuated while school leadership and local police investigated the report of an active shooter on campus. Luckily, the report was unfounded and no one was harmed.

School safety is always our top priority at Peak to Peak and I wanted to share with you a few of the ways we continue working to ensure the safety of everyone on campus.

  • The Executive Leadership Team (ELT) regularly reviews incidents that occur and defines any needed revisions to school level systems and protocols.
  • ELT members regularly patrol campus and check to ensure all doors and the perimeter of each building is secure.
  • Kyle Matthews is Peak to Peak’s Safety and Security lead. He facilitates all school responses
  • All staff are trained on emergency protocols and procedures. These are reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Reminders are sent to all staff each week detailing the expectations for securing our buildings.
  • Additional communications are provided to staff as needed to reinforce school level expectations surrounding school safety protocols.
  • If a situation arises, leaders engage in a follow up conversation with anyone involved to define future solutions.
  • Peak to Peak works with BVSD on a regular basis to ensure we have their support and access to the expertise of their security team. Members of BVSD’s team frequently observe during our safety drills and follow-up with suggestions and modifications.
  • If a situation occurs that is deemed a possible threat, school leadership is in immediate contact with law enforcement as well as BVSD security.
  • From time to time, ELT members engage in practice scenarios to ensure each member knows their role in an emergency situation.
  • The recently purchased additional land adjacent to our campus adds a buffer zone between our campus and the greater community.

These are just a few of the measures we are taking to ensure the safety and security of all members of the Peak to Peak community. There is no one measure or step, but rather it is a layered approach to safety and security that is our best strategy. We learn from each and every incident that occurs both locally and nationally. We are committed to adapting our practices as needed.  As always please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns at jennifer.klein@bvsd.org.

NEW!  Transportation Update

As many of you know, we continue to have issues with reliable operation of our electric buses. Unfortunately, we were unaware when we signed our lease that these buses had not been fully tested in Colorado, and the cold weather has had a greater than expected impact on our buses. Sam Todd and his team continue to work with Highland Electric Fleets and McCandless Truck Center to resolve the issues. We are currently in negotiations to obtain an additional bus for next year at a low cost or no cost, which could serve as a back-up when any of our existing buses are not operating. Xcel Energy has already committed to installing the fast charger at no cost to P2P.

We recognize that it is extremely frustrating when activities and field trips are canceled or postponed due to these issues. Unfortunately, there are very few options other than continuing to work through the issues that arise. Since mid-February, all three large buses have been operating nearly every day and taking multiple field trips and athletic trips.

As a reminder, the initial reason we leased the buses was due to the fact that BVSD and other service providers that we have historically contracted with for school buses are no longer able to serve any of our transportation needs. Our only option was to acquire our own buses and use them to serve as many of our transportation needs as possible.

Peak to Peak leadership and the board were aware that the buses were only capable of embarking on trips that were less than 120 miles roundtrip; the intent has always been to only use buses for local transportation needs.

We would like to thank the Peak to Peak community for your patience as we continue to work through the mechanical issues. Both Highland and McCandless have been supportive and collaborative partners as these issues have arisen and we hope we are getting closer to understanding and resolving these difficulties.

NEW!  Next Community Virtual Q&A on March 15th

Peak to Peak will be hosting a Community Virtual Q & A on March 15th from 6:30-7:30 PM. Please use the following information to join the meeting:

To better understand the topics our community members are most interested in discussing or learning more about, we are asking for input via this webpage on the Peak to Peak website. This page is only visible to parents/guardians using the school-provided login credentials and to adult members of the Peak to Peak staff. This is a discussion format and members are encouraged to engage with one another and to build upon the suggested topics of interest. This meeting will include a short presentation from staff members or administration based on trends in the topic suggestions and questions we receive. While we may not be able to address every topic or question suggested, we will do our best to capture the topic trends.

Click on the "Comments" link to add your ideas or to read what others are saying. Comments are approved prior to posting to the page, so they will not appear right away. The deadline for submitting comments is March 10th. Comments will be approved daily through March 10th, so check back often. Once approved for posting, comments will be visible to other community members when logged in. Please note that usernames will be posted along with your comments, and anonymous comments will not be included.  Thank you for your contributions, questions, and suggestions!

K-12 Pi Day Competition

We will be holding the Pi Day recitation competition on Tuesday  March 14th. We ask that elementary students of any age memorize by heart at least 20 digits or more, middle schoolers memorize at least 50 digits or more, and high schoolers at least 80 digits or more.  Please fill out the form for attendance so that we can send you a certificate of participation and give the top 3 memorizers prizes.  Sign up using the link below or on the QR codes on posters around the school. It is our last year to hear our senior Faith recite many many digits - will there be a new challenger to her school record? Good luck!

End-of-Year Student Information from Our Registrar

As we approach the end of the school year I have a couple reminders for our families.
  • Is your student(s) returning to Peak to Peak in the fall?  If not, please notify our registrar of your student's potential transfer, vicki.lundquist@bvsd.org.  (If your move is not yet a certainty, your student will not be removed from our list until the move is definite.  We just like to make note of the possibilities)
  • End of Year Withdrawals/Transfers:  We ask ALL students that will be transferring to a different school for the next school year, even those that have gone through open enrollment to attend another BVSD school, to formally withdraw.  This just means complete and return our withdrawal form, turn in Peak to Peak materials, and clear all accounts.  Please touch base with our bookkeeper to clear accounts, amy.skinner@bvsd.org , return all checked out materials, (library books, uniforms, classroom materials, etc.), close lunch accounts, and clean out lockers.  Once done please email completed withdrawal forms to our registrar, vicki.lundquist@bvsd.org .  The withdrawal form is HERE.
  • Final Report Cards:  Please plan ahead... Once grades are finalized for the current school year, which is about two weeks after the last day of school, please visit your Parent Portal and PRINT your students report card for your records.  It will only be available until the new school year becomes active.  This is for all students K-12.  For our drivers, this is what the insurance company will require for good driver discounts.

Soon, our staff will begin creating homeroom lists for next year. It is our goal at Peak to Peak to balance homeroom classes based on students’ academic, behavioral, and social strengths and needs. Decisions regarding student room assignments will be made collaboratively among the current teachers, special program teachers and administration. Current needs, special factors, and previous situations are taken into account to best inform class placement for the following year. Lists are created, revised, and reviewed multiple times before they are finalized in August. This process is taken very seriously by staff members, and an extensive amount of time is spent trying to create favorable outcomes for students and teachers in the following year.

If you would like to provide input for consideration of your child's placement, please read this description of placement procedures and complete the included Placement Input Form by Friday, April 7, 2023.

NEW! Internal Student Climate Survey Results

Dear Middle School Students and Families, Several weeks ago, we administered our annual internal student climate survey. Our annual student climate survey gives us insight into our middle school students’ lived experience at this point in their school career, and we are grateful to our students for their participation and candid responses. This spring, we had a participation rate of 86% in the middle school: we are pleased that our participation rate remains high for a second year in a row so that we can more reliably identify areas for celebration and growth.  This year’s Qualtrics survey included... please click Middle School Internal Student Climate Survey Results to read the entire article.

Volunteer Needs

  • Staff Appreciation Lunch on March 9th:  Our next Staff Appreciation lunch is coming up on March 9th!  This is a popular event for our teachers and staff and a great way to show them all how much we appreciate what they are doing. Please email me or call me with any questions or ideas. Nicole Harrison harrisonnicole@me.com (303)803-0453. I've included a link for the sign up here.  Taco Bar.  Thank you so much for all of the help, Nicole.

  • Peak Week drivers:  To help keep the cost for the Kitchen Humanities course as low as possible, we are asking for volunteers who are willing to drive students to two off-campus experiences. You would not be expected to chaperone during the activity itself, just to drive students from campus to the location and then from the location back to campus at the scheduled times. Please reach out to Ace Engelmann (ace.engelmann@bvsd.org) with any questions. Learn more information and sign up here.

  • Garden help:  We are seeking volunteers to help in our Peak to Peak Garden.  Please contact Kim Livingston, kimvlivingston@gmail.com directly.
    • Summer Steward Coordinator: We have a weekly summer schedule where families can sign up to help tend the garden. The coordinator helps to make sure that we have good coverage for the summer and that volunteers know what tasks need to be completed each week.
    • Classroom Champions: I was thinking that it would be great to have a parent for each grade to be the point-of-contact for the garden. You could help the teachers coordinate the garden materials and help the garden lesson go smoothly.
    • Summer Stewards: Adopt the garden for a week. Summer stewards volunteer to help maintain the garden. High school students can earn community service hours by volunteering in the garden.

Volunteer Information

Thank you for considering to volunteer at Peak to Peak!  We will continue to request fingerprints from anyone who intends to volunteer more than once during the school year.  If you had your fingerprints done previously and completed our volunteer waiver and release form then you do not need to complete any volunteer paperwork this year!  Please make sure you have a photo volunteer ID card with a barcode on the back.  Please contact Traci Schoeneweis or 303-453-4682 to verify your volunteer status if you are unsure.

If you only intend to volunteer once then you will be required to do the background check (not fingerprints) and the volunteer waiver and release form each year.  You will be given a one-time volunteer ticket to turn in when you volunteer the one time.  Please follow this link to print them or pick them up at registration:  Volunteer Information

Volunteer training is online.  Anyone that is new to the school needs to view this before volunteering.  If you have previously attended or taken the volunteer training you do not need to do it again.  It’s a good idea for returning volunteers to view this as well for a refresher on protocols.  Follow this link Volunteer Training to view the information.  It can also be found on the volunteer page of the school website.

Your Volunteer Team would love to hear from you. If you have any interest in volunteering for anything at all but do not know where to start please email either Allie Cross or Rachel Hirt, Volunteer Coordinators.  They would love to meet you!
