NEW Pacific Northwest College Tour - Spring Break 2017

Peak to Peak Counseling Center staff Ms. Bostic and Mr. Rauscher are excited to lead Peak to Peak’s first college tour excursion with high school students in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. A maximum of 10 students will visit seven colleges and explore local sites in the Pacific Northwest next year during spring break, from Sunday, March 25th to Friday, March 30th 2017. Aninformational meeting for students will be held on Wednesday, September 7th during lunchtime in the Counseling Center. Projected costs are around $1000 for five nights and six days. Students will get to visit a range of public and private, large and small, liberal arts and research institutions during the trip to explore their best fit. Admission presentations, tours, and a meal on campus will give students a good overview of each college!

NEW College Exploration Throughout High School

Though high school students don't actually apply to colleges until their senior year, the College Counseling Center recommends that younger students and their parents/guardians explore, visit, and learn about colleges throughout the four years of high school. Seniors then have much more knowledge and insight into what they do and don't want in an ideal college, and they can articulate what's important to them. We want students to choose a college where they will be healthy, happy, and successful, and we recommend some of the following ways to start the college exploration process:

  • Sign up for college visits at Peak to Peak. We suggest that Freshmen attend at least 1 college visit (in addition to College Day panels), Sophomores attend 2-3, Juniors attend 3-5, and Seniors attend all colleges you are considering applying to. Note that school day college visits are for students only.
  • Attend local college fairs - check Naviance and our weekly digest for upcoming fairs around the Denver Metro area. Students can pre-register for some fairs here.
  • Visit colleges on school days off - we highly recommend that you visit colleges when their students are on campus! While weekend, holiday, and summer visits are still helpful, seeing a campus that's full of students provides a much more meanginful picture.
  • Talk to current college students. Whether it's a neighbor home for the holidays, older family members, or Peak to Peak alumni, current college students often provide the most realistic, unfiltered picture of a college experience.
  • Research attending schools before signing up for College Day. All 122 schools are now listed in Naviance, so we recommend that students look over the list with parents/guardians in the next week.
