NEW Safety Update


Dear Students and Families,


We’ve been the recipients of a lot of challenging news lately. Too much of it is really tough to digest. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the students and families in Parkland, Florida, and to the other victims of tragedies far and wide. None of these go unnoticed. Our students share the concerns about school violence that they see and hear about, and are looking for opportunities to express themselves at home and at school. They need to process big events with trusted adults, in order to know how to go forth each day in positive ways. I encourage all of us in our Peak community to create opportunities for students to share their thoughts. We need to welcome their voices, whether confused or clear, in the days and weeks ahead. Please help us let your teens know that we are here for them, to listen, guide and sit alongside them as they try to make sense of such senseless acts, and to determine how they will proceed. Processing tragedies is important, and shows the character, compassion, empathy, and social-emotional skills and development we encourage here. We hope to never see tragedies such as a school shooting to become a “normal” occurrence in the lives of our children. While we are not here to share or challenge personal political positions in our school, let it be known that we stand clearly on the side of our students and school community to build a place that’s safe for every learner. Safety is apolitical. We hold true to this commitment today and every day. It is our number one priority.


I also want to take this time to remind you all that we are a strong community precisely because you are here. We depend on our partnership to keep this tight community safe. As the saying goes, “If you see something, say something.” If you notice anything out of the norm in daily operations or interactions you have with others on or off campus, please let a principal, administrator or staff member know right away.


You can call us, send a written or text message, email or voicemail. You’re sure to get a quick response. Or, if you or your student prefer to remain anonymous, you are welcome to post a tip to the Safe2Tell website for any type of concern. Safe2Tell is a site, connected directly to a state police hotline, that lets any student or community member post a concern that demands the attention of the police and/or school administrators. Concerns range from cyberbullying incidents taking place on SnapChat or similar sites with our students, to conversations involving suicide or self-harm, threats or threatening language individuals have made against the school or others in the community, abuse, harassment or violence of any sort, and any type of tip that is legitimate and worthy of the school’s attention. Once submitted, Safe2Tell then links tips directly to local police jurisdictions, school district security personnel at the Education Center, and Peak to Peak level principals. All concerns shared on Safe2Tell are immediately followed up in collaboration with local authorities. That being said, anyone submitting a tip needs to be very accurate and specific with the details provided. False reports are serious, and both our school and the police follow up on all tips. The district also classifies behaviors of concern by documenting events in their information Safety Vortex, a clearinghouse for all concerns for tracking throughout a student’s career in BVSD secondary schools. These stay in place during a student’s tenure in BVSD schools.

NEW New Website Update
Peak to Peak will be launching a new website at the end of this school year. The new website will go live on June 1st. At that time, we will communicate with families regarding how to find summer reading assignments, school supply lists, and current student registration links. In addition, during the summer months and before we return for the 2018-19 school year, we will ask parents/guardians to take a few steps to update their website and communication accounts. We plan to keep the community informed as we learn to navigate these new systems. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me directly:

Peak to Peak Community Meeting on March 7th


Dear Peak to Peak Families,

The future is bright at Peak to Peak! With the unveiling of our new strategic plan in January, the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team have collaboratively identified several strategic focus areas for the coming years. We are excited to share this information with you, our valued community.

To this end, you are cordially invited to attend a community meeting on March 7th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the College Counseling Center. At this meeting, which follows a regularly scheduled Board meeting, we will showcase our new strategic plan and discuss the school’s future directions that are under consideration. We intend to lead a dynamic and interactive session, and would love to have your input as we are charting the school’s path forward over the next five years.

Please join us! We are seeking high school student assistance with onsite childcare during this meeting, so that as many people can attend as possible. If you need child care in order to attend, please fill out this form no later than Friday, March 2nd so that we can plan appropriately.

The 2018 election for the Peak to Peak Board of Directors is coming in early May. There will be THREE OPEN SEATS for elected board members. Two seats have a 3-year term and one seat has a 1-year term. All non-employee school and local community members are encouraged to consider serving on the board. Any candidate for the Peak to Peak Board of Directors, in order to have his or her name placed on the ballot, must deliver a signed Peak to Peak Board Handbook at the time of his or her candidacy submission, which constitutes an agreement to abide by the Board Orientation/Training requirements in the Board Handbook. The Board Handbook will be sent to any candidate who is interested in possible candidacy for review.


Election Committee members for 2018 are: Tina Crist -Chair, Hank Dalton (BOD rep), Joanne Hyman (BOD rep), Michelle Anderson (Accountability Committee rep), Lisa Tracy (Accountability Committee rep), Jennifer Douglass (community rep), Kate Martin (community rep), Ethan Miley (community rep), Traci Schoeneweis (staff rep) and Terri Tarbutton (staff rep). In addition to attending the information sessions, you can learn more by attending an upcoming board meeting, speaking with a current or previous board member, and reviewing the Board of Directors' page on our website.


Once you have decided to run for a board seat, you must formally declare your candidacy by submitting to traci.schoeneweis@bvsd.org written responses to the following questions by Monday, April 2, 2018 3:00 PM :

1. What do you understand Peak to Peak's philosophy to be and how do you support it?

2. What is your primary motivation to serve as a member of the board of directors?

3. How do you expect to separate your parental and board member duties?

4. What do you believe to be the biggest problem or opportunity that our school will face in the next several years, and what skills or background do you have that will help us to achieve the best possible outcome relating to that challenge or opportunity?

5. Please provide a brief bio of yourself (150 words or less). It can include educational background, professional experience, and/or any personal information you would like to share with our community. A photograph of yourself is optional. Please do NOT include any links to outside websites or resources.


A preliminary candidate list will be published to all of the candidates on April 2nd after the 3:00 PM candidacy deadline. Candidates will then have the opportunity to withdraw from the election if they change their mind about running or make any edits to their responses between April 2nd and April 5th. Responses from the candidates who wish to remain in the election will be distributed by email to families in our Friday, April 6th Friday Digest and published on our website.


All candidates must attend our candidate question & answer session on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018 at 6:30 PM. Voting instructions and timeline will be communicated to the entire Peak to Peak community in May. NEW Spring Music Concert

The Spring Music Concert will take place on Tuesday, March 6 at 8:15 AM in the Auditeria. It will feature performances by our Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 4th grade students. You are invited to attend. We simply ask that you sign in at the attendance window after dropping your child or children off for school, and then proceed from there to the auditeria. NEW Peak to Peak Elementary Staff Trained in Well Managed Schools

In an effort to collaboratively support and nurture healthy life-long habits in each of our elementary students, our elementary staff recently completed the Boys Town Well Managed Schools training. On February 9th, 15th, and 16th all kindergarten through fifth grade teachers, specials teachers, administration, interventionists, special education staff, and support staff were trained in the Well Managed Schools Program which focuses on explicit positive social skills instruction.

Teachers began implementation of the program on Monday, February 10th and will continue to do so throughout this school year, with full implementation expected for the 2018-19 school year. The focus of the program is to provide positive opportunities to build relationships with students, approach classroom management with proactive pre-teaching, and provide social skill instruction to decrease behaviors that interfere with learning and encourage the student to use self-management skills to be successful in the classroom. Our hope is that this training will allow our staff to more consistently teach and remind students of appropriate behavior in a positive and student-centered approach.

Boys Town Well Managed Schools also offers parenting resources. The Common Sense Parenting Program promotes the same principles and philosophy as Well Managed Schools. Peak to Peak Elementary is working toward offering a Common Sense Parenting Class to be held at Peak to Peak during the 2018-19 school year. NEW Middle Course Selection Delayed
One of the beauties of the way we operate at Peak to Peak is that we value the input of all of our stakeholders on decisions that impact our learners. You have been provided a message that course selections were taking place at the Middle School this past week, and that you would be returning information to us by March 5th. Our middle school counselors are awaiting information from our administrative team on the next steps in scheduling. The information sent to you earlier was based on our scheduling process of years past. Due to our current exploration of an 8-period day schedule, the course recommendation/selection process has been delayed. It is our intention to have the information you need to you by the end of next week, moving the date to have things returned to the week of March 12th. We apologize for any confusion, and trust that you understand that we are in the process of a potential change which impacts course selection in our Middle School significantly. Please be reassured that the delay will not impact our ability to get the master schedule finished in plenty of time to plan for next year. Students will not be negatively affected at all and, in fact, may have more choices available to them. We certainly value your input.

NEW Message from Principal Mathews: Innovation

Dear Students and Families,

I was incredibly fortunate to attend a Learning and the Brain conference in San Francisco over the Presidents’ holiday weekend. At this conference, I heard from dozens of world-class educators, thinkers and designers including David Eagleman, George Couros, Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, Jonathan Gottschall, Larry Robertson, Todd Kashdan and other authors and neuroscientists from around the world. It was inspiring. They brought their best recommendations for building innovative schools while also connecting us to learning resources that empower young minds in their well-connected world.

The conference was novel in what each speaker shared, from fostering an innovator’s mindset in the classroom (George Couros), to showcasing wearable tech that helps the hearing impaired sense and use spoken language (Eagleman’s VEST, or Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer). Wow, so much to consider in ways to do school for our next generation of thinkers.

NEW After Prom Donations Needed

Dear Parents and Guardians,

My name is Lisa Walther and I am writing to you on behalf of the Peak to Peak After Prom Committee because you have a Junior or Senior at Peak to Peak and we need your help! One of the most anticipated and memorable events for our Peak to Peak students, the High School Junior/Senior Prom, is right around the corner on April 6, 2018. Student Council has a fantastic Prom planned this year, and as is customary for our school, our parent group is sponsoring the Peak to Peak “After Prom.” Did you know that on a typical prom weekend: 48 American teenagers are killed in vehicle crashes, 5,202 are injured and 40% of the deaths are alcohol-related? (DOT)? This year we are collaborating exclusively with Fat Cats on April 6/7, 2018 from 12 am – 4 am to provide a fun, safe and substance-free After Prom event for our kids. We are asking for your help to make this a safe and memorable night for our kids.

This event requires a significant amount of planning, resources and support. Over the past several months we’ve been working feverishly with local businesses and within the community to raise funds to offset a portion of the ticket price and to pull off the event. But we are not there yet, and we cannot do this alone! We are counting on the generosity of people like you to help us fund the experience and contribute door prizes geared for teenagers and incoming college freshmen.

Here’s what we need:

  • Gift cards to restaurants, entertainment, and big box stores such as Target, Wal Mart, Best Buy

  • Prizes such as backpacks, headphones, laptops, phones, coffee makers, mini refrigerators, bikes, comforters/linens, TVs, calculators, IPODs

  • Monetary donations to offset the costs and ticket prices of the event.
