ALERT: Peak to Peak's Future Funding is in Jeopardy -- We Need Your Help!

We would like to update our families on a very important topic that the Peak to Peak board and leadership team have been discussing and monitoring all school year: Boulder Valley School District’s (BVSD) required implementation of the Mill Levy Equalization Act (aka HB17-1375). BVSD is required to publish a plan for distributing current and future mill levy funding to their charter schools by July 1, 2018.

Per the provisions in the statute, BVSD can adjust their plan annually if they choose to do so, and it is apparent from recent BVSD board meetings that they are indeed examining scenarios that could do great financial harm to Peak to Peak.

While Peak to Peak has enjoyed a positive and collaborative relationship with BVSD for many years, punctuated by the establishment of a 10-year contract term negotiated a few years ago, the recent change in leadership at BVSD has brought a shift. For seemingly political reasons, unrelated to students’ best interests, BVSD is actively looking for ways to significantly reduce local funding to Peak to Peak, and the other charter schools in our district. They plan to do so by using the recently-enacted mill levy equalization law (HB17-1375), which was designed to ensure that all Colorado charter schools have equal access to local funding.

To address these issues, we have been meeting frequently with district staff, BVSD board members, other charter leaders, the Colorado League of Charter Schools (League) advocates, as well as our legal counsel. This letter, written by the League to the BVSD board and leadership, aptly sums up our concerns.

Current scenarios under consideration have Peak to Peak potentially losing anywhere from $50,000 to more than $1 million in annual revenue over the next several years. This is contrary to the intent of the law, voter intent, and is in opposition to our charter contract that we negotiated in good faith in 2015. We believe that BVSD is taking steps that would serve to discriminate specifically against charter school students by taking away funding that traditional schools would continue to receive. These actions would have devastating impacts on BVSD charter schools over time. It is imperative that we speak up now against BVSD current course of action, and its potential impact on Peak to Peak. We sincerely hope you will join us.

How can you help?

  • Please review the background, context, and talking points here: P2P Position Statement on HB 1375 - Context and Background.docx
  • BVSD is planning to study this issue in open session at their regular board meeting on May 22nd at 6:00 PM. Make your voice heard by signing up to give a public comment at the beginning of that meeting. To sign up, call the Board Secretary at 720-561-5114 prior to the meeting, or sign up in person starting at 5:30 PM on May 22nd. Contact us if you would like help with talking points. A vote is planned on June 12th.

  • Call or email BVSD Board of Education members to express your opinions. The Peak to Peak Board of Directors would appreciate being copied on your communications.

  • Contact the Colorado League of Charter Schools for guidance on approaching state legislators to gain insights into HB17-1375.

  • Attend Peak to Peak Board meetings on May 16th (8:00 AM) and June 6th (5:00 PM) to learn more about potential impacts on Peak to Peak. Both meetings will take place in the College Counseling Center.

  • If you have marketing, public relations, or political lobbying expertise and can volunteer your time to this issue, please contact us.

  • Talk to your friends and neighbors about this important issue and encourage them to get involved, too. This is not just a Peak to Peak issue -- it’s an educational equity issue that affects the entire community.

Please contact me, Sam Todd, or any P2P Board Member with questions or suggestions. Thanks very much for any assistance you can offer.

Sincerely,

Kelly Reeser, Executive Director of Education - kelly.reeser@bvsd.org

Sam Todd, Executive Director of Operation - sam.todd@bvsd.org

NEW Boxes Needed

We need your help!! Elementary teachers have a huge undertaking this end of year. The exciting news is carpet will be installed in each classroom over the summer. The hard news is each classroom must be completely packed up in BOXES!! WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF CARDBOARD BOXES. The boxes must be in good shape and have the ability to be completely sealed. If you have boxes at home or are able to purchase a few boxes for your classroom/s it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Boxes can be dropped off in the south building lobby. Additional needs may include packing tape and/or volunteers to help our teachers pack next week! Please contact your homerooms if you are able to help! Thank you very much for your support! Our fully carpeted classrooms will be such a wonderful gift for our students next year.

Elementary End of Year Report Cards:

As with other report cards this year, the end of year report cards for grades 1-5 will be available online through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, beginning Tuesday, May 29th (new date from BVSD). Please see this document for additional information about accessing report cards.

Sign Up Now for August Assessment Day/Registration

Each year in August, a few days before school begins, students meet with teachers for initial greetings, visiting classrooms, bringing school supplies, and starting beginning of year assessments. This allows students and teachers to get to know each other in small groups, gain familiarity with new classrooms and grade levels, and greatly reduces first-day jitters and materials.

Please sign up for one-time slot during our Assessment Days of August 13-15, 2018. Plan for your student to be at school approximately two hours. These days also serve as Elementary Registration Days, including school pictures and health room items, so plan to take care of those items either at the beginning or ending of the testing time slot.

Sign-ups will be completed on the same system we use for scheduling conferences. This will also email you a link with the ability to change over the summer should your plans change. Please visit https://peaktopeak.as.me/ to choose a time for the grade level your student will attend next year!
